SHERRY STEIN'S BIO

S.STEIN Workbags grew out of Sherry's love for her work, and a desire to take it with her wherever she goes, comfortably and in style.

Sherry has a degree in industrial design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, but her design career began at the age of nine in a small town in northern Colorado, where she and her sister Char outfitted Toni dolls with elaborate "Scheherazade" and "Gone with the Wind" clothing collections made on their miniature Singer sewing machine.

Since then her work has taken her many places listed below:

  • Blankenship: San Francisco, 1970's, developed a line of canvas and sheepskin ski jackets, mini-skirts from bisected military jackets and book bags from canvas and leather livestock feedbags.
  • Char and Sher Designs: Santa Fe, 1980's, established a design and manufacturing business in Santa Fe with her sister Char, producing Southwest-inspired leather and suede clothing and accessories for Barney's, Saks Fifth Ave and Lord and Taylor, as well as boutiques throughout the US, Europe and Japan.
  • The Cadillac Couch: Santa Fe, 1980's, created a series of couches from the rear quarter of vintage Cadillacs (models from 1955-61), sold in prestigious art galleries in the US and Europe.
  • Nike: Portland, 1990's, joined the footwear staff and created notable styles such as the "Rock-art outdoor sandal" and "Work boot with manhole cover outsole."
  • Sherry Stein Industrial Design: San Francisco, late 1990's, designed and contracted the fabrication of custom furniture for private clients, while continuing in footwear design with clients Fila, Reebok, Capezio and Ariat.
  • GAP: New York, 2001, Design Director of Men's Accessories.

Recently, Sherry returned to her beloved Southwest to create and launch the S.STEIN Workbag line. Other S.STEIN lines include "Get Lost" flip-flops and "The Perfect White Shirt."
